The accident occurred on Sunday, December 18, at 4:00 pm., twelve Ferromex containers loaded with corn, paper and other products were damaged. According to Ferromex employees, train service to the south of the country won’t be resumed until Thursday, December 22. Investigators do not know the exact cause of the derailment; they suspect the rail tracks could have been damaged by bad weather conditions or by the theft of metal plates from rail lines. Police also said they will maintain strong vigilance along the Puerto Penasco – Mexicali section due to the high risk of theft from train containers.
