The work stoppage came after the government’s decision on January 1st, of removing the subsidy on fuel, causing gas prices to increase to more than double. Not only petrol stations but offices, stores and even schools were closed on Monday January 9th, the first day of work stoppage. The spike on fuel prices has caused the cost of transport, food and basic necessities to go up.As a result of the strike, called out by union labors, the Apapa port in Lagos has closed, cutting off cargo shipments. Air carriers have also canceled  international flights. The strike has also fueled violence among different religious groups and so far has caused the death of at least three people and several more have been wounded.According to organizers the strike will continue until the government revokes its decision to remove fuel’s subsidy.
